Program: Ticking Time Bombs? Teenagers, Sex, Life, and the Church

There’s a kid in the church who’s pretty clearly gay. The girls in the confirmation class are starting to develop those secondary sex characteristics that make the boys sit up and take notice in a way talk of the Trinity never, ever does. Somebody’s teenaged, older brother is about to become a father. Somebody’s older sister was assaulted, by her boyfriend, after school. Somebody’s divorced father has asked his girlfriend to move in. Somebody’s in love for the first time.

Adolescence is a time of huge changes: developmental, emotional, physical and social. It’s a time in which kids thrill to discover their individuality, and lament the ways they’re different from their peers. It’s a time of raging hormones and hearts worn on sleeves. It’s the best of times and worst of times. It’s a time when they need adults: trustworthy, loving adults to be in relationship with them, to listen to their questions and to speak in courage and in love when those questions demand response.

Come for a morning of learning and discussion as we seek to better serve the kids in our care, and to prepare our congregations to raise up disciples with healthy visions of themselves as created in the image of God.

Bromleigh McCleneghan is an ordained Elder, currently serving as the Associate Pastor and Director of Christian Education at Baker Memorial UMC in St. Charles. She completed a joint M.Div and Master of Public Policy at the University of Chicago, and wrote a thesis on Christian Sexual Education Curricula and the politics, policy and theology wrapped up in talking about kids making out on the basement couch.

After our program, you are welcome to join us for lunch at the Thai Restaurant next door.
There is no fee for the program, but we do ask that you cover the cost of your lunch.
